A tie rod is a high-strength steel bar used in formwork systems to hold formwork panels together and resist the pressure of wet concrete. It connects opposite shuttering plates firmly so that they do not spread apart during concreting. Tie rods are used along with wing nuts, washers, and spacers to maintain the required wall thickness. After concrete sets, the tie rod can be removed or left inside depending on the design.
